When the Lights Went Out

Last week, I stumbled into a coffee shop after an appointment and instantly fell in love with their coffee and their food. I had no idea this place even existed…and while I knew there had to be a story behind it, I didn’t have time to learn it that day. The man at the counter was pretty reserved (clearly an on-the-fencer), so I mentally bookmarked it. I felt the tug. I knew I’d be back.

This past Friday, I returned, planning to work there between appointments. Five minutes into opening my laptop, the power suddenly went out for the entire building. We didn’t know yet that the whole area was experiencing an outage.

While the owner was in the back trying to figure out what was happening, customers kept trickling in asking if “we were open.” And even though I didn’t work there, I did what I could to help. We all know small businesses can’t afford to lose a customer.

And funny enough, in the dark, things started to light up.

With the power out, I ended up chatting with the customers, sharing a bit about Unapologetic, and even selling a few matchas along the way. By the time the owners came out, the entire vibe had shifted. The moment to “Love ’Em Down” had arrived. We finally connected, and they began sharing their story with me, both him and his wife.

Within minutes, I realized there was a huge opportunity to pour into them and their business. I left excited, hopeful…and reminded them they owed me a sandwich. ;)

But it wasn’t until I got in the car that the God-wink hit me.

If the power hadn’t gone out…
If we hadn’t been forced into that moment of small adversity…
If I hadn’t been nudged into helping…

I probably would’ve worked for a couple hours and left without making any real impact.

I felt the tug the week before. I came prepared. I walked in with books in my backpack and postcards in my hand, hoping that maybe, just maybe, I’d get to share this message with someone it was meant for.

But it took the lights literally shutting off for God to say, “Hello? Yoo-hoo? Pay attention.”

So now I have to ask you:

Where in your life is God trying to throw you a sign?

Why does it so often take something big (like the power going out) for us to notice?

As you move through this week, look for the God-wink.

  • The moment of opportunity.

  • The person you’re supposed to serve.

  • The nudge you’ve been ignoring.

These moments are all around us. We just have to slow down long enough to see them.

& be nothing but yourself.

Big Hugs & Love,

Cassy
