the only thing holding you back…

I was sitting on Zoom with a client a couple weeks ago when I said something that stopped me as much as it stopped her.

"The only thing that was holding me back was me."

I hadn't planned to say it. It just came out...the kind of sentence that surprises you on the way out of your own mouth. I wrote it on a sticky note and then I turned it around on her.

"And I think the only thing holding you back is YOU."

We do this constantly: set our default to whatever's outside of us. It's the organization. It's the market. It's the person, the timing, the location. Insert your excuse of choice HERE…

But tt was never the timing.  It was never the person. It’s rarely the ____

The truth is quieter than that, and harder to hide from: the only person who gets to decide the outcome of your life is you. 

Which also means the only person who can actually hold you back... is you too.

You already know this.

You've felt it every time you didn't send the email, didn't make the call, didn't take the step you'd been planning for months, waiting to feel ready first.

Here's what I've started doing instead: the second I hear myself say "it's the ____” I stop and ask one question.

What's the smallest move I could make right now that doesn't need anyone else's permission?

That's it. Not a five-year plan. Not the perfect next step. Not a big grand strategy. Just the one move in front of me.

I'm in another build season right now, which surprises some people and makes others laugh, but I stay movin'. And if I'm honest, I still can't wrap my mind around everything that's happened these last two months. But when I stopped waiting to feel ready and made the one move I'd been avoiding, things opened up faster than I saw coming.

This is the question I want you to sit with, not skim past: where are you standing in your own way right now?
