Turn the penny over

It’s midnight. My youngest woke up screaming and we couldn't figure out why. Not long after my lab decided she was a cat. Storms terrify her, so she used my head as a landing pad, like something out of Aristocats, except my lab is 45 pounds and not a kitten.

By morning I was wrecked. Tired, grumpy, one cup of coffee in, wanting nothing more than to put my pajamas back on and disappear into Ransom Canyon for the rest of the day.

My oldest was in her feelings too on the drive to school. Same rough night, same wrong-side-of-the-bed morning. I heard myself telling her the thing I needed more than she did: a bad start doesn't get to decide the whole day.

You know the thought that shows up right behind it. If it started wrong, it's already shot… Might as well write the day off and try again tomorrow.

So here's my one move, and it's nothing fancy.

Feel it, actually feel it, don't skip past grumpy straight to grateful. But don't stay there, put a limit on the sulk, mine's about as long as the drive to school. Then do the one small thing that flips it, whatever that looks like for you.

Mine's getting up, rolling over, and turning the penny right side up, on purpose.

Then something happened that made the whole reset moment worth it.

On the way back from drop-off, a friend sent me a voice note. She's reading Unapologetic for the first time. The book's closer to a year old than it is new, but for her the timing was perfect. And she was thanking me, for one chapter…for not toning it down.

She said she'd been shouting "PREACH" in her car, listening to my own voice come through the speakers. She shared her aha-moments and how the message served her. As she shared her drive with me, I sat through mine and cried, the overjoyed kind of tears, caught off guard by the timing and the kindness of all of it.

Right after I chose to get up on a wrong-side-of-the-bed morning, someone flipped the penny back up for me. That's the choice…every time: lean into the light or slide back into the slump.

I've told you before to watch for those moments. The Godwinks. They're everywhere once you start looking.

And your belief multiplies. It doesn't stay with just you.

Mine taught my daughter something on the drive to school. And almost a year ago, choosing to share one chapter without toning it down is what let a friend hear exactly what she needed today, then hand it right back to me.

So tell me: what's your version of turning the penny over?

Big hugs & so much love,

Cassy
