She’s finding her voice 🤍
A lot of people don’t know, but in a previous life, I was a speech-language pathologist (SLP). This is totally the same as a speech therapist, but we paid for a lot of school so you can bet I’m using the Fancy Nancy official name.
My favorite thing about working as a SLP was watching my kids find their voice and in-turn giving their families the opportunity to communicate with them in ways they’d never been able to. I still well up in tears thinking about it.
It was a gift to know that first words were uttered in my room, “I love you’s” were made because of the work these families were doing, and that the frustration of communication deficits could be alleviated or reduced as a result of our efforts.
I get asked if I miss it and although I miss my kids, I know that God’s got me exactly where I’m supposed to be.
But last night, Sophie girl was babbling “mamamamama” in her crib and both Hallie and I heard it on the monitor. I leapt out of my chair and started running around the house with the monitor trying to find Eric so he could hear it too.
Now as I shared, I’m a SLP so I am well aware that she’s babbling and likely not calling out for me, but this is still way better than Hallie’s first “dadadada” ;) Because it’s totally not a competition or anything…
Her sweet voice coming to life was just the absolute greatest part of my day. There is nothing more special, as a parent, than watching your kids grow. It’s a blessing to hear her voice start to form and I know what a gift it is. I’ve seen firsthand the work that it sometimes takes.
But this gift is one so many of us take for granted. I know my SLP tribe is very in-tune with the fact that not everyone has a voice, some have it taken away, and others will always be restricted.
In knowing that, how are we using the gift that we are fortunate to have?
Do you use your voice for good? Do you use it to communicate what’s on your heart? What you believe in? Or what’s right?
If you’re not, what’s holding you back?
In the coaching I do through Unapologetic we talk about this a lot. If it’s something you struggle with, you’re not alone. Whether it’s an outside voice or the one in your head, we’ve all experienced the reluctance.
I hope you use your voice for good. I hope you use it for what’s on your heart. I hope you realize that you’re a gift to this world and those around you.
If you need a tribe to lift you, look no further. If you want more support with this, please don’t be a stranger.
& be nothing but yourself.
The audiobook for Unapologetic will be available 10/28/25!
