Choose your words wisely…
We grew up hearing or saying, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” And I think the idea here was to remind us that we could make a choice in how words affected us.
As much as I love the idea of not being negatively influenced by the unkind words of others, the truth is that words do hurt.
One of the harder chapters I share in Unapologetic is called Sticks and Stones and I talk about many of my personal experiences. I’ve been on the receiving end of some horrible comments and behavior, but I’m also just as guilty of speaking them.
Some people grow up and others never do.
As we absorb the heaviness of the world right now, we are reminded in real time that when people are scared, sad, or unsure many will turn to spite.
Some outwardly, some behind the protection of their screen, some towards people they claim to love.
A dear friend was experiencing this firsthand and ultimately chose to walk away from this relationship recognizing that it couldn’t serve her or her best self. But these choices are never easy. (I’m so proud of you friend.)
Yesterday, she got to hold Unapologetic for the first time and the very first page she opened to was this chapter…She was able to share this story with me in real time and as she did, we both welled up in tears. All the God-winks!
She said, “Words do hurt” and “I’m tired of saying sorry.” You’re not alone my sweet friend. We are never as “alone” as we may feel.
So as you go into today and beyond, I challenge you to choose your words wisely.
Whether spoken, written, or typed, our voice has great power.
Use it for good.
Use it to elevate, encourage, and brighten the light of those around you.
We oftentimes don’t know what someone is facing so be the changing tide that lets others rise.
& be nothing but yourself.
The audiobook for Unapologetic will be available 10/28/25!
