…the thing about advice

Do y’all have that friend? The one who comes to you for advice and you provide your feedback, give honest direction, and then for what feels like the 100th time, they respond receptively, but then chuck your advice with the trash?

If you’re not able to identify this friend relatively easily, I have a hard truth for you this morning…it might be you, but back to our scheduled programming.,

Finding advice isn't the hard part anymore.

If you're hungry for growth, you can open a book, download a podcast, join a community, watch a video, or ask someone who's been there before.

Information is everywhere.

Application is where things get interesting.

And being a gatherer of great information is fantastic. Wanting to be a student of “life” is something to be admired and a drive not everyone has.

But a good student who never takes that knowledge outside of the classroom misses the entire point of learning, no matter how much information they've gathered.

I’d argue the same in athletics…practice is essential, studying film, refining your skills, identifying your weaknesses...all essential. But if you gathered all of that intel week-over-week and then never applied it during your games, what’s the point?

So during the last 5 minutes of our sermon this week when Eddie quickly shared the 3 lessons from the entire teaching, I found myself asking:

Am I a collector of good advice, information, and insight? Or am I actually applying what's been shared?

Because it’s one thing to seek good counsel, but it’s another to take it and run with it.

So I’m encouraging you to ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Am I seeking growth through appropriate channels? (Advice, feedback, ongoing education) If not, what’s standing in your way?

  2. Am I applying what I’ve heard and learned or letting it fall on deaf ears?

  3. Where can I provide insight to someone I care about to support their development?

Seeking and applying are two very different challenges.

One has to come before the other.

But information only changes your life when it becomes action.

So where can you run with some great advice this week?
