Why do we fear being regular?

Last weekend we had a tattoo party where I shamelessly gave both Hallie and our niece 5 tattoos (at least šŸ™ˆ ). Their face, arms, legs…they were covered in sparkly unicorn goodness.

To my surprise, I came back from Chicago and the two tattoos covering both sides of Hallie’s face were still there holding strong, glitter and all.

I shared with Hallie that after a week of rocking enough tattoos for a biker gang, we had to wash them off and give our face a fresh start.

She took the liberty of washing off her own tattoos and was seemingly fine until she looked in the mirror.

That’s when she said it…

In the most disappointed tone, she looked at her reflection and shouted, ā€œI’m regular!ā€ā€¦ ā€œI look so regular!ā€ (cue the theatrics of a pre-teen who’s lost her best friend)

But the words struck me because it’s a fear that so many of us feel deep down.

That without the shine, the title, the applause, the filters, or the glitter, we’re just ā€œregular?ā€

But isn’t regular where our real magic lives?

Who we are has nothing to do with titles, accolades, or ā€œglitter.ā€

The truth is, being regular isn’t the opposite of being extraordinary. It’s the soil it grows from.

It’s who you are when no one is looking. It’s the quiet confidence underneath the sparkle.

And that, my friends, is anything but regular.

How do I teach this to my sweet 3-year old?

I gave her the biggest hug and reminded her what a gift she was just as God made her.

Unicorn tattoos or not, she is pure magic, goodness, and joy.

We’ve all been given gifts and it’s up to us to use them, Unapologetically.

I hope today you see the gifts within you and those around you.

I hope you’re reminded that the regular you is the only thing you can give the world that no one else can.

So be nothing but yourself. We need you after all.
