Is this seat taken?

I've had two completely opposite things happen this week, and y'all know you'd be the first ones I'd tell.

In the first scenario, a highly respected CEO shared an exciting new idea with the people closest to her.

Instead of curiosity, she was met with caution. The questions turned into doubts, and every possibility she raised became a problem to solve first.

By the time the conversation was over, she had started second-guessing something she had been genuinely excited about.

A few days later, I found myself in a remarkably similar situation.

I shared an idea with the women around me.

Before I could even finish explaining it, they were asking:

"When are you launching?" "How can I help?" "I can't wait to see what you do."

Same uncertainty. Completely different outcome.

And I couldn't stop thinking about why…

She had the talent. She had the experience. She had the ability. It’s not like I carry more confidence than she does. The only real difference was the room each of us was asking.

And that leads me to you today. The truth is, we spend so much time looking for advice from the people closest to us…

Instead of seeking it from the people closest to the destination.

Sometimes the people who love us most are also the people who unintentionally keep us safe. Not because they don't believe in us. Because they're viewing our future through the lens of their own fears, experiences, limitations, or safety net.

That's why I've become increasingly careful about who gets a vote in my life.

Not everyone should get a vote in the future you're trying to build.

That doesn't mean they don't love you, or that they're wrong. It just means not every opinion should carry the same weight.

The wrong conversation at the wrong moment can convince you to abandon an idea that deserved more time.

But the right conversation can give you just enough belief to take one more step. And we know that belief multiplies.

So today, I have two questions for you.

Who's sitting at your table?

And more importantly...

Who have you given a vote that they never should have had?
